Chinese poker, also variously called the Russian poker is a card game popular in Asia over a long time, but its appropriateness as a thrilling gambling game has made it a common game on offer in many casinos worldwide and has become a favorite with many gamblers. Nowadays, it is played in many leading casinos with those in Las Vegas being a major haunt for Chinese poker players even as the game was discontinued from the play menu in World Series of Poker after only two years in 1995 and 1996. However, the game is popular as an additional game in several large poker tournaments with stakes varying between $25, $50, $100, $500 and $1000 with the higher stakes favored by seasoned poker gamblers.

The basic rules of gameplay resemble poker and anyone who knows the hand ranking used in poker games can play Chinese poker. The huge element of blind luck that accompanies a game of Chinese poker often allows rookie gamblers out-play veterans although unlike other gambling games, these winnings are only short-term and the more one plays, the use of tactics can become more useful in making him win. However, it has often been seen that bad players seem to be guided by fallacy that beginner’s luck should bail them out forever and whenever they lose they blame the layout of cards rather than poor strategy.

However, one must remember that a game of Chinese poker can recurrently and with perfect randomness churn out hands holding high ranked cards and this in turn results in unexpected wins and losses. A definite advantage of this gambling game is that not more than four players are generally required to play and in some cases, if there is a lack of interested patrons, only two or three players can play a bout of Chinese poker.

Almost every casino has some or the other kind of unique set of rules binding on the gamblers. However, there are also some common poker rules followed by casino houses that all poker players are required to observe in course of the games.

One such important edict states that any payer wishing to re-raise or call must match the amount of the current raise or the bet size in the earlier round. He is exempt from such a rule only when he wagers his entire chip stock by going all-in. A major rule for poker players strictly to be followed is that no hole cards, even of those players who have folded, can be revealed before showdown. Known as the ‘Show one, show all’ rule, hereby if one player shows his hole cards to another, the other players can also demand to see the revealing player’s cards. This rule also includes the uncalled winning hand. Interestingly, when a player has a winning hand and it is uncalled, he is free to expose or not to expose his hand.

It is commonly understood that other players or those who are merely watching a game in progress, can in any way advise anyone on how to play his hand. Some other prohibited activity during playing poker games include not divulging the hand by any verbal manner or any gesture and also no player can, under any condition, remove cards from the table and conceal them in any way. If a player wants to convince other players to fold their hands by showing his superior hand, this practice is also against rules of the game. Another regulation requires all players to not conceal their chips that have the highest value. Also, not only buying and sharing of chips among players is not allowed, no one may also share chips that are only his. And last but not the least is the golden rule that not the player’s statement but what his hand-held cards really are should determine the outcome of a game during showdown.

Poker has become a very popular game in all casinos, a situation which has led to setting up of a common rule book for the players. Apart from the rules of gameplay and the regulations that individual houses may formulate for its patrons to observe, there are several other rules that a poker player must commonly follow.

A very basic rule for playing poker is that it is the responsibility of the players to prevent their hands from being prematurely revealed. Careless players, who leave their hands unprotected, are often warned by the house dealer, who can muck the hands if the warning is not heeded. It is also desired that players should not bet, call or raise out of turn but their actions are validated if no one else has betted, called or raised before the player’s own turn comes. Sometimes gestures and sometimes verbal announcements are allowed in course of a poker game, although the latter is given precedence and considered binding. A case in point is when a player instead of verbally saying he wants to raise, puts forward chips worth at least half the amount of raise money. Either the player can be made to wager a full raise or if his action is considered as merely a call, then the extra chips he has put forward may be returned to him.

It is important for players to understand how chips function in a poker game. If the game is being played for limit, excess chip is taken to be a call unless the player declares it to be a raise. In no limit poker games, such a situation is considered only before the flop. Once flop has happened, the excess chip is placed in the pot and it determines the bet size. In case of pot limit and no limit games, when a player puts in extra chip and announces a raise the value of the chip is taken to be the maximum permissible amount of raise.

Poker is a much sought after game by gamblers in any casinos. So apart from certain rules that vary from one casino to another, most have a general set of card room regulation for the players. For example, players wanting to avail poker playing facilities in the casinos can only do so as long as there is accommodation available and those who come first, get served first. This often is evident in some casinos with limited seats where there is a long waiting list of gamblers eager to play the various games. Some casinos allow players to call in beforehand and keep a place reserved for them for a period of time.

Most of the casinos do not allow poker games to be played with hard cash, though in some houses it is permitted. So, generally an alternate currency system is prevalent where players can buy casino chips on payment of money and use the chips to bet. These chips can either be bought from a selling counter installed for that purpose or sometimes there is a casino staff appointed for supplying players with chips as they want. However, it is a common rule in casinos not to allow chip transaction between players.

Unlike many other gambling games, poker is typically played among players and not against the house. So, the only source of revenue for the casinos is charging of fees. One such is the commission called rake where the game is played for low stakes and for ring games, this amount can vary from 5 to 10% for individual poker hands up to a preset maximum value. In Californian casinos where rake cannot be legally charged based on the pot size, it is calculated on the table limit of betting. For higher stake games, a casino often charges a rental fee on an hourly basis, called the time fee. For poker tournaments, the participants generally have to pay a fee of about 10% of the buy-in.

In a game of Caribbean stud poker, the house edge is always slightly over 5%. The reason why casinos make it mandatory for players not to know each other’s hands is because it has been calculated that if there are seven players, then anyone who knows the hand of the other six, that is which 30 cards they are holding, can have an edge of about 2.3.

Before the winner is entitled for a payout, the dealer has to have at least an ace or a king card, without which players get even money on their ante wager and the bet money gets cancelled. When no player can better the dealer’s hand, the entire pot, consisting of the ante and the bet wagers, is won by the dealer. There is another way a gambler may win some dough in the Caribbean stud poker game. He can stake on his poker hand besides the wager on the table by the progressive meter system where the chip acceptor machine can be fed $1 worth of gaming chip. The gain of the players is that this winning is above any which he may make from the table bets. While in U.S. casinos, anyone who has a hand of flush, full house, four of a kind, straight flush or royal flush can win $50, $100, $500, 10% or 100% of progressive meter respectively, in casinos of Macau the hands of flush, full house and four of a kind gives payout of $1000, $1500 and $5000 respectively with players having straight flush or royal flush winning the same dough as in U.S. casinos.

The version of Caribbean stud poker game played in England is the same as in the United States except that the ante wager is fixed at ₤100 and so the bet wager can be a maximum of ₤200. Since a straight flush and a royal flush both gives 50-to-1 odds, the maximum payout to the winner of the pot can be ₤10,000.
